Tasks of the Association and its activities

Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms and strengthening civil society institutions in Russia

The International Association of Russian Advocates aims to contribute to the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms and the strengthening of civil society institutions in Russia through the promotion of a number of initiatives and the implementation of projects. By interacting with human rights organizations and groups, as well as with other civil society institutions within the framework of the main focus of its activities, the Association protects human and civil rights and freedoms, as lawyers play a crucial role in ensuring fair justice. The Association is called upon to promote the introduction of international standards into Russian legislation and judicial practice, which in turn will strengthen the legal system and civil society.

Interaction with international institutions, including UN statutory and treaty bodies

The Association actively cooperates with international organizations and the United Nations, seeking attention to cases of violation of lawyers' rights in Russia and promoting the issues of compliance with international standards concerning both the issues of organization and activities of the Bar and protection of rights of citizens and legal entities. The Association is preparing an application for consultative status with the UN ECOSOC.

The lawyer is the person who exhorts, appeals, persuades, preventing injustice that is about to happen and appealing to those, and only those, norms and values that are valid for decision-makers. The primary model of the lawyer, the archetype of the lawyer, the pra-advocate, is the person who prevents unjust violence with words, and the organized community of persons who devote their lives to opposing unjust violence with words is already advocacy.

A valid, genuine law on the Bar can only be a law that incorporates the canons of the Bar as a human rights institution; and such a law can only be drafted by civil society itself, not by a group of lawyers aligned with bureaucrats.
